上世纪九十年代初，我由北欧转到底特律一家医院继续做医学研究。初来乍到，最需要的是解决行的问题，在朋友帮助下，很快就看上了一辆福特公司产的Mercury
Topaz, 三年新，八万迈，四千美金。我们开车一个多小时在一个深山里，见到车主人，是个白人，在福特公司工作，每天上班来回两个小时，难怪三年就开了八万迈。朋友试车，感觉还不错，砍价到$3500， 卖主一句"Welcome to USA " , 成交!
有了车，下个任务就是学开车，我在住家附近的路上学了两，三次后，一天姓汤的朋友正好有空，说带我去高速转一圈，于是，他坐旁边指导, 我们就上路了，刚上高速，车盖就被风吹飞起来了，可能由于一天前加水没盖严，情况紧急，朋友说赶快从下一个出口出去，前面视野完全被车盖挡住，好在还算镇静，看到车盖下头有条缝，就凭那条缝的视野，开出了高速，停下来的时候还差点撞到墙上。那次真吓着了，几天都不敢学开车，尤其觉得对不起汤姓朋友，其实他会开车时间也不长，想给他两百块钱表示歉意，他死活也不要，后来还一如既往地教，真的,到现在还心怀感激。
学了二十多天以后，通过了驾照考试，总算可以自由上路了。第一天自己开车去买菜，在一十字路口，前面吉普车急刹车，我在后面没踩住，碰了一下它，开车的是一黑哥们，戴着耳机，边开车边摇头晃脑听音乐，他感觉到了震动，回头看了一眼，我示意他下车，哥们摇摇头，急踩油门扬长而去。
这件事也让我吓了一跳，心想刚开车就出交通事故，这以后保费还得了。到了周末，就赶快去了一家修车铺，车铺前写着检查车免费，我告诉小伙计，刹不住车，小伙计卸下几个轮胎仔细检查，折腾了一个多小时，又装回去了，告诉我没有事，车闸皮也还有百分之七十，他真的一分钱都不收。不好意思，我给了他十几块钱，叫他换了一下机油。那时很感慨，美国人怎么这么诚实。
开车一段时间后，车技不断提高，也常去比较远的地方玩。有次去参加一个party, 为了赶时间，穿过一黑人区，不久就被警车拦下来，白人警察告诉，此路限速二十五，我已开到了四十六迈，在他开罚单的时候，我一岁的小孩儿正在车里哭，我就告诉警察说，我小孩高烧，急着去医院，所以才超速了，警察看了看小孩，是满脸通红，说这次就不给你罚单了，赶快去医院吧。这种违规了没有给罚单的事我以后再也没碰到过，但撒了谎，太不应该。
这第一辆车伴我们家走过了在美国最初岁月，车和事，留给我们是美好的回忆。两年后，这辆车三千美金卖给了一个留学生，我们也离开了底特律，踏上了去加州的征途。
